Geoinformation

I'm a bit of a keen user of geographical, mapping and GIS systems. To that end, I would like to keep track of a few good places.

  • Envisat MERIS Image Rapid Visualisation (MIRAVI) is a warehouse of recent satellite imagery from all over the globe. The images aren't quite the same as Google Earth, for example, because they are truly only from satellite. The resolution is not good enough to spot your house, but maybe your city, rivers and nearby bushfires. The system is designed to rapidly post incoming satellite imagery. At the moment it appears to only work with Internet Explorer.
  • Google Earth is a program designed to allow users to intuitively navigate google's large collection of satellite and aerial photography as well as georeferenced information to provide an informative overview of the world.
  • Google Maps is the web-based counterpart to Google Earth, which provides the added option to navigate in a "Map" style, showing you simply landforms, streets and property boundaries instead of actual photo data. Somehow, using their Google black magic, all of Australia is mapped and searchable.
  • WikiMapia is a Google Maps API application that allows one to plot and describe things that appear in the aerial photography.
  • NASA World Wind is similar to Google Earth, but does not seem to incorporate aerial photography. There are many options for different layering of NASA satellite data.

Weather

Yes, I'm a weather geeban. Don't judge me.

  • BoM is the national meteorology department and have lots of cool stuff on their site.
  • UQ GPA Weather is the data coming off a weather station set up inside the University of Queensland, St Lucia.
  • Accuweather (Brisbane). Accuweather is a weather site, Brisbane is linked here for convienience.
  • Energex Lightning Tracker shows lightning for the prior 75 minutes, delayed by 15 minutes.
  • Strikeone is a hobbyist's creation which uses BoM and other data to create quite a well featured weather site.

Internets Humour

Eh. They're funny.

Economics

  • Google GapMinder - a graphical interface showing x/y plots of various economic measurements for almost all countries in the world. Not really great for anything except an intuitive introduction to economic correlations (it doesn't cite resources or give actual statistics) but interesting nonetheless.
